Stay Safe in These Areas
While Medellín has improved significantly in safety, visitors should avoid certain districts known for gang activity, petty crime, and drug-related issues
- Comuna 13 (San Javier). Known for its gang activity, recent infrastructure improvements and community efforts have made parts of Comuna 13 safer. However, some parts still have gang activity, and it is not recommended to stay overnight or explore independently at night
- El Centro (La Candelaria). The downtown area of La Candelaria can be visited during the day with caution. It has high rates of petty theft, pickpocketing, and street crime, especially around Parque Berrío, near the river, and after dark.
- Western Medellín Districts (San Javier, Belén, Robledo). These western neighbourhoods have been contested by armed groups and local crime gangs, leading to ongoing security concerns.
- Northeastern Comunas (Aranjuez, Castilla, Manrique, Moravia)
These residential areas have high crime rates and limited police presence, making them risky for visitors. Extreme caution or avoidance is recommended. - Bello and Buenos Aires. These areas have higher crime rates compared to central Medellín and require increased vigilance, particularly at night.
- Parque Lleras (El Poblado). Parque Lleras has seen a rise in petty crime, drug-related issues, and sex tourism. Visitors should be cautious, especially at night and avoid walking alone in dark or lonely spots
- Parque de las Luces and Parque San Antonio
These public spaces attract drunks, drug addicts, and the homeless, with frequent street crime including knife attacks and armed robbery. They are not recommended after dark or when alone.
Security Advice for Medellín
Be aware of your surroundings.
You should be aware that the city still has some no-go and poverty-stricken areas where crime gangs are in charge and even the local police are reluctant to enter. Familiarise yourself with our stay-safe guidance on this page
Touring the City
The safest way of touring the city is by using secure transport or joining official guided tours. In crowded areas, keep your phone, wallet, and other valuable items close to your body and out of easy reach for pickpockets.
Avoid walking alone in poorly lit or deserted areas like parks and open spaces at night
Stick to well-lit and busy streets. Be aware that even busy streets present some security risks
Take care of your documents
Keep your original documents like passports and visas in secure storage and carry copies with you when out and about in Medellín
Limit the use of cash
Be discreet about withdrawing cash from ATMs. Carry minimal amounts of cash and, wherever possible, spend at legitimate establishments that take debit and credit cards
Be cautious on public transport
Use of public transport is reasonably safe during busier times of the day, but we recommend avoiding it altogether in favour of secure transport or official taxis at night
